I have moved to TheBigFundamental.com and @wayneTBF
Laters.
The San Antonio Silver Stars came off their one week break looking like a team that had been on a one week break. Rusty, unenergetic, and discombobulated.
They came out of the funk. Then went back into it. Then out. And in. They played one of the most uneven games I’ve seen. And, frankly, it wasn’t good basketball.
The Spurs second round draft pick, Davis Bertans, is playing in the FIBA U19 tournament in Riga, Latvia. He plays for Latvia.
Today, against Argentina, he laid a monumental egg.
There’s no sugar coating this loss. It was awful. Awful, awful, awful. That’s three awfuls. One for each of the following:
– The Silver Stars shooting
– The refs
–The production quality of the Liberty broadcast
The draft day trade of George Hill made me sad. I’m sad that such a fine person is leaving the organization. I’m a Spurs fan and it bums me out that he’s no longer one of my guys. Boohoo for me.
I’ve spent the last week trying to figure out what draft day meant from a basketball perspective. What does it say about the team going forward? What is the front office thinking? Are we better? That kind of thing.
James Gist and Curtis Jerrells, last seen toiling for Partizan Belgrade, have both signed with Fenerbahce Ulker in Turkey.
I think it is cool that they are continuing to play together. It’s also an interesting sign that neither, especially Jerrells, waited to see if they would catch on with an NBA team. I think we’ll see more and more of the marginal players signing early in Europe.
Malik Hairston is probably glad he signed his two-year deal with Montepaschi Siena.
Erazem Lorbek, whose rights the Spurs acquired in the George Hill trade, had his team option picked up by Barcelona for next year. So there’s that. If he ever makes it over, he’ll be at least 28.
Robertas Javtokas, an old Spurs’ pick, is heading back home to Lithuania after signing with Rytas. He played in Valencia last year with Nando De Colo. The year before he was at BC Khimki with former Spur Keith Langford.
Eight games into the season, the Silver Stars sit at the top of the league standings at 7-1. A 84-74 road victory over Chicago Sky Tuesday night is their latest impressive win. They game wasn’t televised, so I can’t give a good recap. Instead, I’ll do some box score reading and a little stat analysis for you.
